Abstract

The expansion of coffee in both the Northeast of São Paulo and in the south of the state of Minas Gerais was more dynamic as of the 20th century, so that both the São Paulo town of Ribeirão Preto and the Campanha, city of Minas Gerais, presented expressive coffee production in the first decades of the new century by hand of free work. However, the significant production of the coffee in the late nineteenth century showed signs of greatness, gaining space in the midst of the production of subsistence crops if still using the captive arms. Thus, the present work proposes to perform a survey of aspects that allow to analyze the structure of slave ownership in their final moments and at the same time in the initial periods of coffee in these two locations.
