This paper looks into the relationship between economy, science, and technology in Brazil in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. This study's starting point consists of a discussion on the coexistence of a rural slave society alongside modernizing ideals endorsed by enlightened sectors of the Portuguese government. The paper investigates the main aspects of the domestic production system and its technical basis and pinpoints which were the constraining factors and conditions for economic chance and development. Low incentives to both innovation and enhancement of production were default traits of the colonial economy, and they were reproduced, consolidated, and reinforced in post-independence Brazil.
