A economia em Machado de Assis, by Gustavo Franco: a critical reading

Abstract

This text offers a critical reading of the work A economia em Machado de Assis: o olhar oblíquo do acionista, by Gustavo Franco. Initially, this work will be contextualized in the field of Intellectual History, understood here as one of the approaches to the History of Economic Thought. Franco's work will be presented as well as the central themes of the 39 chronicles by Machado de Assis selected and commented by the author. This selection and comments, as we will demonstrate, are made with the aim of disqualifying the economic thought of Machado de Assis in order to offer an othodox reading of the economic history of the last years of the Empire and the first years of the Republic.
